Non-Traditional Paths

We understand that not every student wants to pursue a traditional college education right after high school. It just isn’t the right option for everyone. It is still important to have a plan, and our one-to-one counselor to student model is perfect for forming one. It allows our counselors to truly get to know each student and customize a personal plan for success.

Here are just a few of the non-college options available for students after high school.

Gap Years
Vocational Schools
Military Service
Transition Programs

While many speculate that taking a gap year will make a student “rusty,” research shows that students who take a gap year perform equally as well, if not better, academically than those who don’t. The Gap Year Association, which accredits numerous gap year programs, lists a wide range of options on its website including experiences that match the interests of Fusion Academy students. Animal welfare and conservation, language studies, coding, cultural immersion, ecology, are just a few of the programs available.

The education offered at vocational schools allows adults to focus on the skills to enter a particular industry, with the option of not taking unrelated general education courses required for an associate’s degree at a community college.

When it comes to joining the Military, knowing where to start may seem difficult, but it doesn’t have to be. Our staff is here to help you navigate the essential first steps toward service to your country, including eligibility and testing requirements, meeting with recruiters, boot camp, job specialties, and officer training.

If your student has a disability that can make educational advancement challenging, transition programs are a great option. These community-based programs help improve students’ success in transitioning from school to adult roles. They can be a great way to get your student prepared to join the workforce while getting involved in the community in which they live.
